Stop Smiling and Start Standing Out: How to "Get Different" with Your Marketing Photos
Stop Smiling and Start Standing Out: How to "Get Different" with Your Marketing Photos
Ok, so you’ve got your team's headshots and smiling photos that show everyone’s face.
Check! Marketing is done. Right?
Uh. No.
Those smiling photos are everywhere you look! You know the ones—endless smiling headshots plastered on billboards, websites, and social media. You probably don’t even notice them anymore.
Well, guess what? Your customers are tired of it, too. It’s time to shake things up and get different with your marketing photos.
The Problem with Traditional Marketing
Let’s face it: the world is overflowing with brands and businesses trying to get your attention. Sure, a smile is nice, but when everyone does it, it becomes the visual equivalent of white noise. Imagine scrolling through your feed and seeing the same staged smile over and over. Snooze-fest, right?
The key to grabbing attention in this sea of sameness is to stand out.
Ask yourself: What are you doing to stop the scroll in your business?
Find Different!
Here’s where we get to the fun part—getting different. I’ve worked with my Business Brand Collective members to create intentional marketing that’s anything but boring. So, how do we do it?
First, we have to figure out what makes you different.
REMEMBER - people EXPECT you to know how to do your actual job. That’s the bare minimum. What makes your offers DIFFERENT or makes you stand out?
What are some of your potential customers' fears or questions before choosing you? How can we address those?
Another trick? We use AI tools to brainstorm and get our creative ideas flowing. AI can help you come up with themes and suggestions. Then, tweak those ideas to make them uniquely yours and perfect them for your ideal clients.
Attract: Drawing Attention with Visuals
Now, quality still matters. Professional images stand out more because of their quality and lighting. But quality alone isn’t enough. You need that extra oomph—a surprising element that makes people stop and look.
A brainstorming session is in order, and if you’re not a creative, marketing-minded person - It’s time to find someone to partner with you. You need a list of 5-10 ideas to get you started.
You have to be brave to try something unique. If someone in your area is already doing this marketing technique or it’s considered “best practice,” don’t do it.
We are standing out now, remember! Make it different.
We aren’t attracting the masses. We want to have a specific type of person in mind. That’s the only way this works.
Remember, simplicity is still key, but make them feel or want to do something.
Don’t clutter your images with too much text or busy backgrounds. Keep it clean and easy to understand. Imagine you’re driving past a billboard at 60 mph. If your photo and message can’t be grasped in that split second, it’s too complicated and not just for that billboard. It’s the same for social media, too.
Direct: Guiding Your Audience to Take Action
Alright, you’ve got their attention for a couple of seconds—now what? You need a clear call-to-action (CTA). Don’t just slap your photo and address on there and call it a day. Tell your audience what to do next.
How about a few ideas off the top of my head for some generic marketing?
Add a QR code that leads to a free coupon or gift. Create a contest for people. People love free stuff and friendly competition! Have a mistake or some hidden gem they need to find in the photo. Introduce a puzzle they need to solve. Tell a joke or have a quiz.
These ideas are easy things you can do that also get you contact information to follow up with them.
It’s your Turn!
So, stop just smiling at the camera and start thinking differently about your marketing photos. Ask yourself: What are you doing to capture attention? We need your unique story told in a way only you can.
