Sep 17    Chiho Aoshima: Landscape: Another Dimension

Wednesdays-Thursdays: 12-6pm (until February 4th, closed February 5th-March 2nd on Wed/Thur)

Fridays: 12-9pm

Saturday-Sunday: 12-6pm

Monday-Tuesdays: Closed

This five-channel video installation by Japanese artist Chiho Aoshima traces the cycles of nature in a surreal, vibrantly colored landscape full of fantasy and wonder. Influenced by Japanese manga, anime, and woodblock prints, Aoshima depicts a hybrid world in which the past and future and the organic and inorganic have merged. Beginning with a garden paradise, Aoshima’s scenes morph into cityscapes where living skyscrapers sprout during the day, only to be overgrown at night by a landscape filled with ghosts and fairies. Cycling from day to night and from rural to urban, this mesmerizing work presents both an apocalyptic and utopian vision that nonetheless offers a promise of hope and regeneration. The exhibition will be open during regular gallery hours until February 9; after February 9, the exhibition will be open Friday-Sunday until the exhibition ends March 2.

Sep 21    E-Waste Recycling Event
Chamber of Commerce Provides E-waste Recycling Event During Sustainability week 2014

Blacksburg/Christiansburg, Virginia, September 11, 2014– The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, serving Blacksburg, Christiansburg and all of Montgomery County will provide an opportunity for local small and medium sized businesses and local residents to dispose of electronic waste through a recycling event at The  Home Depot in Christiansburg on Sunday, September 21, 2014 from 12:00 noon until 3:45 pm.

Many small businesses lack the opportunities or knowledge of how to dispose of electronics such as computers without harming the environment and also without passing along valuable information in the hard drive. The Chamber has several partners for this event such as, Synergy Recycling which specializes in electronic recycling, The Home Depot of Christiansburg and AesirTech Computer Consulting. Chamber sponsors of this event are: BAE Systems, AesirTech, APCO, Premier Moving and Storage.

Mr. Wellons, owner of AesirTech will clean the hard drives and return to the individual for reuse or smash the hard-drive in front of the individual. If the individual is unwilling to wait, a certificate will be sent to the individual from Synergy Recycling. Any usable pieces will be reconditioned for resale by Synergy and unusable items will be disposed of with the least amount of local or global impact. Synergy Recycling prides itself in holding an R2 Certification for recycling electronic waste.

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce launched the Green Initiative in June of 2013. This initiative is designed to provide educational opportunities and build awareness among members of the Chamber to implement green business practices and to promote those businesses who are employing green business practices.

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce serves Blacksburg, Christiansburg and all of Montgomery County.   It is the fifth largest in the Commonwealth of Virginia and supports approximately 700 local businesses through educational and networking opportunities.
